Osaka Night Weather Month by Month
Osaka’s weather does not decide whether an evening runs — it decides what kind of evening you get, and what time it can start. guided tours of Osaka after dark lists the departures; this page is the month you are travelling in.
What the weather does to an evening here
Two things change with the season and both change the night rather than the comfort. The first is light. Sunset moves from 16:47 in early December to 19:15 at midsummer, so a 6pm departure is a night walk for half the year and a daylight one for the other half. Nothing else about the evening moves as much.
The second is heat. Every one of these evenings is outdoors on foot between rooms, and one operator’s own listing records Japanese summers reaching 40 °C and winters dropping to −5 °C, telling travellers to prepare accordingly. Another asks you to bring water and wear a hat. Rain is the least of it: the routes are largely covered and the eating is all indoors.
Osaka night by night, month by month
Sunset figures are the mid-month times published by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan for Osaka in 2026. Temperatures are evening ranges.
January
The coldest month, with evenings around 3–8 °C and the year's driest air. Sunset is 17:10 mid-month, so a 6pm departure is fully dark. The New Year closure at Osaka Castle Main Tower runs to 1 January. Arcades and covered markets are the warm half of any route, and every operator still runs.
February
Still cold, 4–9 °C after dark, and still dry. Sunset moves out to 17:41 by the middle of the month. This is the quietest stretch of the year for visitor numbers, which shows in how easy departures are to book. Kushikatsu and hot oden are at their best in it.
March
Milder, 7–13 °C, and sunset reaches 18:05. Cherry blossom arrives in the last week or so, which fills Osaka Castle Park in the evening and makes the walking routes busier. Book earlier than you would in February.
April
The best month to be outdoors here: 12–19 °C, sunset at 18:30, and blossom through the first week. Departures fill fastest now and in the autumn. Evenings are comfortable in a light jacket and the walking is easy.
May
Warm and mostly dry, 17–24 °C, with sunset at 18:54. Golden Week in the first days brings domestic crowds to Dotonbori and Shinsekai; the guided evenings still run, but the streets are busier and the counters fuller.
June
The rainy season starts, and sunset reaches its latest at 19:13. Rain here is warm and comes in bursts rather than all evening, and the routes are largely covered. Humidity is the real change — it makes three hours of walking feel longer than the same walk in April.
July
Hot and humid, 26–33 °C, with sunset at 19:12 and the rainy season ending mid-month. A 6pm departure now begins in daylight and only reaches full dark in its second hour. One operator asks you to bring water and wear a hat; take that seriously.
August
The hottest month, and the one an operator's own listing means when it warns of summers reaching 40 °C. Sunset is 18:47 mid-month. Evenings are the sensible time to be out, and the air-conditioned rooms these tours use are part of the appeal rather than incidental.
September
Still hot at the start, 24–30 °C, easing through the month, and sunset drops sharply from 18:25 to 17:44. Typhoon season peaks now; storms are occasional rather than constant, and the operators who reserve a weather cancellation are thinking of these days.
October
The other best month. Cooler at 17–24 °C, dry, and sunset back to 17:24, so a 6pm start is dark again. Autumn colour arrives in the parks late in the month. Departures book up as fast as in April.
November
Crisp, 11–18 °C, and the light goes early — 16:54 mid-month, reaching the year's earliest sunset at the end of it. This is the month the illuminations begin on Midosuji. Bring a jacket for the walks between rooms.
December
Cold and dry, 5–12 °C, with the earliest sunset of the year at 16:47. Every evening runs fully after dark, which is the best the neon ever looks. Osaka Castle Main Tower closes from 28 December, and departures thin out over the New Year.
The year at a glance
| Season | Evening temperature | Sunset | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter, Dec–Feb | 3–12 °C | 16:47–17:53 | Fully dark by six; easiest season to book late |
| Spring, Mar–May | 7–24 °C | 17:54–19:05 | Blossom, Golden Week, and the fastest-filling departures |
| Summer, Jun–Sep | 24–33 °C | 17:44–19:15 | Rain to mid-July, heat all through, late light |
| Autumn, Oct–Nov | 11–24 °C | 16:47–17:43 | Dry, cool, dark by six — the best of both |
The seasons, and which one you want
Spring, March to May. The best walking weather of the year and the busiest. Blossom fills Osaka Castle Park from late March, and Golden Week in early May brings domestic crowds. Book weeks ahead.
Summer, June to September. Hot, humid and, from mid-June to mid-July, wet. The evening is the only sensible time to be outdoors, which is an argument for these tours rather than against them — but the light arrives late, so a 6pm start is not a night walk.
Autumn, October and November. The other good season, and arguably the better one: dry, cool, dark by six, and with the Midosuji illuminations starting in November. Book as early as for spring.
Winter, December to February. Cold, dry and dark early. Every evening runs fully after sunset, which is when the neon looks best, and the covered arcades and warm rooms carry the route. It is also the easiest season to get a place at short notice.
Best time of evening
Between eight and eleven, whatever the month. That is when the frontages are all lit, the counters are full and the canal is worth photographing. A 6pm departure puts you in the middle of it by the second stop.
Earlier has one advantage: Kuromon Market’s stalls keep their own hours and are a daytime and early-evening proposition, so the one evening that includes it starts there. Later has one constraint, which is the last train.
What to wear, by season
Summer: light clothes, water, and a hat if you are out before dark. Spring and autumn: a light jacket for the walks between rooms. Winter: a proper coat, because you will be in and out of heated rooms all evening.
All year round, wear shoes you can stand in for three hours. Every route includes station stairs, stone lanes and arcade floors, and there is very little sitting outside the meals.
If the weather turns
Typhoon season peaks in September. Storms are occasional rather than constant, and the operators who mention weather cancellation are thinking of exactly these days. For what happens then, see the cancellation answers on the FAQs page.
Frequently asked questions
The questions that come up most are about the extremes. Does it get too cold to enjoy? No — December evenings sit around 5–12 °C and most of the route is indoors or covered. Is summer unbearable? After sunset, no, but it is humid, and the walking stretches are the part you will feel. The full set is on the FAQs page, and Osaka Night Tours has the evenings themselves.
