A good way to learn about the food and the culture from somebody local. We are vegetarian and still ate well — vegetable kushikatsu and okonomiyaki, and mochi ice cream in place of the octopus. Our host showed us the photo spots too.

Our guide was good and the sashimi at the first stop was excellent. The rest was ordinary, and the third place was a standing counter rather than the restaurant we had pictured. For the money I would have booked a restaurant.

We met at the shop, ran through allergies and what to expect, then took the metro out. We were told to bring a certain amount of cash because these places are local and not set up for visitors, which turned out to be exactly right.

What comes up again and again
Four things recur across the evenings. The first is the guide: almost every positive review names one, and several people say the guide is the reason the night worked. The second is access — the phrase “we would never have found it” appears in review after review, on every operator.
The third is quantity. On the food evenings people describe finishing more than full; on the bar evenings they describe small plates and drinking, and two reviewers who expected dinner said so plainly. The fourth is cash: reviewers on the bar nights mention being told to bring it, and being glad they did.
Where the criticism lands
It clusters in one place: the gap between what a listing promises and what an evening delivers. One reviewer on a food walk found the guide was not local; another on the same product found it good value and a highlight of the trip. One on a backstreet evening found more drinking than food. These are kept here because a page of nothing but five-star quotes tells you nothing about which evening is yours.
