Two or three small bars in a district you would not have found, reached on foot or by metro, with a guide who orders, translates and introduces you at each counter. Two hours on one of them, three or three and a half on the others.
The rooms are the product. Uranamba — the blocks immediately behind the Namba arcades — and Kyobashi, east of the river, are full of six-stool bars with frontages you would walk past twice. Some have no sign worth reading. Most take no cards.
What you are buying is not the drink. It is being brought in by somebody the person behind the counter recognises, which changes the reception from polite bafflement to a conversation.
Tickets start at $30, which is a third of a food evening. You pay for the guide and nothing else, and you decide what the rest of the night costs.
Nothing is pre-ordered on your behalf and nothing is bundled. If you want one drink you buy one; if you want five you buy five, and the table splits the total at the end.
Uranamba is two minutes off the canal and invisible from it. Kyobashi is a twenty-minute ride from Namba and sees almost no visitors at all.
Caps run to eight or ten and one listing describes five to ten guests as normal. Solo travellers do well here: you arrive alone and spend the evening at a table.
Every one of these finishes in a bar rather than at a station, and the operators encourage you to carry on. The metro runs to about midnight either way.
The honest comparison, because the ticket prices suggest a gap that does not survive the evening. A $30 ticket plus 7,000 yen at the counters lands within a few dollars of a $69 food evening with nothing to settle.

So the choice is not really about money. It is about whether you want to be fed or whether you want a night out. The food tours page makes the other case.
Price band. $30 to $44 a head for the ticket, plus 7,000 to 10,000 yen at the counters. Budget 12,000 to 15,000 yen in cash for the evening as a whole and you will not be caught short.
Duration. Two hours on the Kyobashi evening, three on the Uranamba crawl, three and a half on the karaoke one. All start between 17:30 and 18:30.
Age. Twenty and over without exception, because that is Japan’s legal drinking age and every venue serves alcohol.
Booking window. Easier than the food evenings, but still worth a fortnight. Midweek departures run smaller and are the ones to take if you want a table rather than a crowd.
If you are under twenty, none of these will take you, and that is not negotiable. The food evenings take thirteen and sixteen year-olds, and one welcomes all ages.
If you want dinner, you will be disappointed here and two reviewers have said so plainly — these are small plates alongside drinking, not a meal. If you do not drink much, the shared bill makes this poor value, because the total is divided evenly however little you ordered. And if you want your own party rather than a table of strangers, the two private walks do that and neither is drink-led.
