Things to Do on an Osaka Night

An evening that costs nothing

Walk from Namba Station to the Ebisu Bridge, photograph the Glico sign, then turn south into Hozenji Yokocho and follow the stone lane to the temple. Come back up through the Sennichimae arcade. That is ninety minutes, it costs nothing, and it takes in the two things everyone comes to see.

Extend it by taking the metro two stops to Dobutsuen-mae and walking Shinsekai under Tsutenkaku, which is free from the street. Nothing on this route needs a ticket, a booking or any Japanese.

An evening built on food

Osaka’s word for its own appetite is kuidaore — eating yourself bankrupt — and the food is the reason most people book anything here at all. The canonical three are takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu, and they are geographically split: takoyaki and okonomiyaki around Dotonbori, kushikatsu in Shinsekai.

Done alone, the difficulty is not finding a shop but ordering in one; the counters with the queues are the ones with no English menu. An evening built on drink

The drinking districts are Uranamba behind the arcades, Tenma north of the river and Kyobashi east of it. Standing bars, six-stool counters and rooms with no sign are the format, and it is the part of the city that most rewards knowing somebody.

Two practical facts shape it. The legal drinking age is 20, and every drink-led evening here enforces it. And these counters run on cash: two operators tell you outright to bring 7,000 or 8,000–10,000 yen a head. The bar hopping page compares the three.

An evening with a view

Two towers stay open late enough to matter. The Umeda Sky Building’s observatory takes its last visitors at 22:00 from 173 metres up, and Tsutenkaku at 21:15. Both are bought on the door, and neither is included in any guided evening listed here.

An evening without alcohol

Every guided evening here works without a drink in your hand. The food tours serve non-alcoholic choices at the same stops for the same fare, and reviewers on them are frequently families rather than drinkers.

What you would avoid is a bar-led evening, where the drinking is the format rather than an accompaniment — not because you would be unwelcome, but because you would be paying for the part you are not using. Pick a food evening instead.

An evening with children

The age floors run 13, 16 and 20 depending on the evening, and one food walk welcomes all ages and offers infant seats. Families with teenagers have reviewed the food walks warmly — the format, a walk between rooms with food arriving, holds a teenager better than a museum does.
