Osaka Night Backstreet Tour: Izakaya Dinner and Hidden Bars

A narrow Uranamba backstreet lined with small bar frontages

Ninety minutes over an izakaya dinner with the drinks included, then a walk along the canal and into bars that do not take walk-ins from strangers. This is the evening people book for their first night in Osaka and then spend the rest of the week using.

Dinner first, then the doors you would not have opened

A real dinner, not tastings

Ninety minutes seated in a Sennichimae izakaya, with the food and the alcohol both inside the fare.

Introductions, not just directions

The guide takes you into bars where being brought by somebody is how you get a seat.

The canal on the way

Dotonbori, Hozen-ji Temple, the Shinsaibashi arcade and the Glico sign are all on the walk between rooms.

Alcohol is included

Unusual at this price. The only thing you buy separately is an extra round.

Twenty and over

Japan's drinking age, and it makes this a genuine adults' night out.

How the three hours are spent

You gather in the car park beside an izakaya on Sennichimae a little before six. The first ninety minutes are spent there, eating and drinking, which is longer than most evenings give to any single room and is the reason people describe this one as a dinner rather than a tasting.

After that the group walks: ten minutes along Dotonbori, ten at Hozen-ji Temple, past the Shinsaibashi arcade and five minutes at the Glico sign. The bars come at the end, and they are the part nobody could have done alone.

What the introductions actually buy

Small Osaka bars are not hostile to visitors, but they are small. A room with six stools and a regular clientele does not have a system for a stranger who cannot read the menu, and the honest answer is that most people walk past.

What your guide does is walk in first. They translate at the counter, order the things you would not have known to ask for, and put you in conversation with the person pouring. That is the product.

The rooms are in Uranamba, the blocks immediately behind the Namba arcades, rather than in Shinsekai further south. That matters if you are planning two evenings: this one and a Shinsekai food walk cover different halves of the city.

Hour by hour

  3. Ten minutes along Dotonbori
  4. Ten minutes at Hozen-ji Temple
  5. Past the Shinsaibashi arcade
  6. Five minutes at the Dotonbori Glico sign

Who this suits, and who should book something else

This one is for you if: A first night in the city, and anybody who wants the eating and the drinking in one booking rather than two. It suits sociable travellers — you will be at a table with people from several countries — and anyone who wants to be shown where to come back to.

Book something else if: Under-twenties, because the drinking age is enforced. Anyone who wants a food-led evening has a better option here: this one leans towards the drinking, and if dinner is the point the Shinsekai food walk puts fifteen dishes in front of you instead. Sixteen travellers is also more than some people want.

Frequently asked questions

Is dinner really included, or is it tastings?
It is a dinner. The listing calls it a local izakaya dinner and gives it ninety minutes of the three hours, with alcoholic drinks included alongside it.
How many bars do you visit?
The listing promises hidden bar introductions without fixing a number, and the itinerary gives the walking stops rather than the bars. Expect two or three rooms after the meal.
What if I do not drink?
You will still eat well, but you would be paying for a component you are not using. A food evening is the better buy — the Shinsekai walk covers three drinks that can all be soft.
Is sixteen people too many?
It is the departure cap rather than the usual number, and most evenings run smaller. If a hard maximum matters, the Uranamba crawl works to a smaller table.
Will there be other people from my country?
Frequently not, and that is part of it. One reviewer counted Australia, the United States, Japan and Korea in a single group.
How does it end?
In a bar rather than at a station, within a short walk of Namba. The metro runs until roughly midnight, so there is no rush.
